This is a collection of songs that have inspired me during the course of writing and illustrating the webcomic Marvel Knights Adventures. It's a fairly wide variety of artists, I'll admit (probably the only time you'll ever see Amy Grant and Rob Zombie on the same CD!), but these are the main pieces of music that struck a chord with me, capturing what I feel to be the key elements of Bruce Banner, the Hulk and assorted supporting Marvel characters. It's also interesting that the song titles presented in this order tell the story of the Hulk's origin, the introduction of Daredevil and the Punisher, and hint at the ultimate conclusion of the entire story.
1) The Scientist
Coldplay
I don't like Coldplay at all, but there's something about this song that I like. I still haven't figured out what that is...
2) Change
Deftones
A disturbing song, yet intriguing and catchy, I'm not so sure if it has to do with a metamorphosis of Hulk-like proportions, but the theme is "changing", right?
3) More Human Than Human
White Zombie
Zombie at his best. A heavy-hitter with a superb rhythm, this track has a great "pounding" feel. This is the song that sticks in my head when writng most action/fight scenes. Hulk Smash!
4) Break Stuff
Limp Bizkit
Another band I don't care for -- rap-metal's not my thing -- but "anger" is what we're going for, and this track's got anger to spare.
5) Symphony of Destruction
Megadeth
Great tune. The song's not really about Hulk-style destruction, but I love it anyway. Like White Zombie's "More Human Than Human" (see above), this track's got a great pulse to it.
6) Crawling in the Dark
Hoobastank
I'm not a fan of this band, and certainly not a fan of the movie that made this song popular (2001's The Fast and the Furious), but the song's good and it fits the mood of Banner's struggle, as well as Frank's and Matt's.
7) Tourniquet
Evanescence
I was going to go with "Everybody's Fool" off of their hit album The Fallen, but this song has a stronger religious theme that is perfect for Daredevil and his crisis of faith.
8) Childhood Remembered ("Batman" soundtrack)
Danny Elfman
This is a terrific, dark piece by Elfman. The militaristic percussion, moody strings and choral voices make it a perfect theme for The Punisher's origin, the Castle family's ill-fated "picnic in the park". It also works well as a theme for Daredevil.
9) Tears in Heaven
Eric Clapton
This is the Punisher's theme. It's an emotional, sad piece, and Clapton's message to his son asks the same questions that Frank has for his lost wife and children. As a writer, I have to descend to a dark place of my mind when writing the Punisher, and this song serves to remind me that Frank is a human being, not an emotionless Terminator.
10) Disarm
Smashing Pumpkins
Another Daredevil song. Works for Banner too...sort of.
11) I Will Remember You
Amy Grant
Some may question why this is here among the others. Seems out of place, no? Well, this is simply a beautiful song, and I envisioned it as Betty and Bruce's love theme.
12) End Credits ("Hulk" soundtrack)
Danny Elfman
A powerful conclusion to the underrated Hulk movie, and a perfect piece for the conclusion of 'MKA'.
13) The Lonely Man Theme (from "The Incredible Hulk")
Joseph Harnell
One of the most haunting, tragic and inspiring pieces of music ever written, in my honest opinion. Should have been used in the Hulk movie. It's Banner's fate really: Just a lonely man walking. And searching...
